Annapolis Rock and Black Rock are amazing viewpoints along the Appalachian Trail. For those thru-hiking, Annapolis Rocks offers first-come-first-served campsites and a couple composting privies. A pipe stuck into the mountainside provides access to a fresh mountain stream. Rock climbing on the face of Annapolis Rock is popular. Black Rock is a couple miles down the trail and provides a similar view, but without the campsites and privies.
My favorite thing to walk up and look off. Lots of college kids pass me on the way up and they aren' the friendly, "Say hit to you" kind that most hikers are, but you still get a few typically friendly hikers, and the people I run into at sunset have been all nice, so far. It's a nice mix of up, down, flat, and view, making it some good cardio.
The scenery is beautiful, but the ease of access has made it especially easy for those that could care less to pollute the area and damage the environment. Please do your part and pack out any trash you pack in, follow the other leave no trace principles and, if possible, help the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club out by taking out trash left by other, less considerate, visitors.
